This TFG is part of a project of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche for the management of waste produced by the entity. The objective is the quantification and characterization of waste, as well as research, experimentation and optimization of decentralized composting processes, with which to value organic waste. This measure can reduce the amount of waste produced and bring us closer to achieving the Sustainable Development goals. This initiative is aligned with the projects developed in the different Spanish universities, called Campustaje. The project began in April 2022 and the following actors are involved: GIAMA research group (Group for Applied Research in Agrochemistry and Environment) of the Department of Agrochemistry and Environment, as well as the Environmental and Sustainable Development Area and the Gardening Area from the UMH. The objective is to study the production of inorganic waste by type, as well as the use and management of organic waste (FORS) from the university cafeterias and the remains of mixed pruning from the campus itself, using the composting technique. For the analysis of waste production, a valuation and characterization by type of inorganic waste was carried out. Subsequently, the organic waste was recovered through composting in 800-liter compost bins (n=2). Physicochemical analyzes of the product were carried out in the first, second and third month from the beginning of the process. In these it was possible to observe that the quality of the compost was adequate, except that sanitization could not be achieved. With this TFG, the importance of using composting as an adequate system for the recovery of organic waste is demonstrated, obtaining a product with high added value.
