Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder highly prevalent in
children and adolescents. Despite being a very complex and heterogeneous disorder,
ADHD symptoms usually appear before the age of 6 years, presenting a great temporal
stability and persisting throughout the years. The detection of ADHD in the preschool
stage (between 3 and 5 years of age) would allow early intervention, reducing its
symptoms and modifying the course of the disorder. The general objective of this thesis
is to improve the knowledge of ADHD symptoms in preschool population through the
analysis of its factorial structure and its detection possibilities. In addition, the aim is to
know the rate of suspicion of ADHD at this stage and to examine the relationship of these
symptoms with some variables of interest in the child's functioning. Nine schools
participated and a final sample of 258 children between 3 and 5 years of age (47% girls)
were evaluated by teachers and families. The results showed that ADHD in preschool
population presents a trifactorial structure with good psychometric properties and that
there are assessment instruments that can be used in the detection of ADHD in children
aged 3 to 5 years. On the other hand, the suspicion rates found in this study differ greatly
depending on the informants (teachers or family) and the criteria used to define a case
as positive, although there is a clear relationship between ADHD symptomatology and
greater functional impairment in children in areas such as academic, behavioral, social
and family. This doctoral thesis demonstrates that ADHD symptoms can be detected early
and that they are early associated with different problems in the child's life. The detection
of ADHD in preschool would allow the identification of children at risk for ADHD and the
application of preventive interventions to moderate the symptoms and modify the course
of the disorder over time.
