The phenomenon of dual pathology (DP) or dual diagnosis currently constitutes a significant percentage of people diagnosed with a serious mental disorder who also live with an addictive disorder. The connection between the two disorders implies a relationship of influence, where psychopathological destabilization can activate or aggravate the addictive disorder, and vice versa. As a consequence, the clinical evolution and the psychosocial rehabilitation process are compromised, registering worse values in adherence to treatment, higher relapse rates and increased problems in the social and family environment. The present review aims to determine which psychological techniques or therapies of group and/or individual application, based on evidence, have proven to be effective for the psychotherapeutic treatment of dual patients. For this purpose, a review has been conducted following the PRISMA Protocol of clinical trials where different psychotherapy modalities have been tested in the approach to these comorbid disorders in the last 10 year s (2012-22). The results indicate that the therapies and techniques that could promote a positive psychological impact and help pharmacological treatment in this clinical population are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and its third generation variants; Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as the specific techniques tested; contingency management, cognitive restructuring, behavior modification, social-cognitive rehabilitation, behavioral activation, prolonged exposure, interpersonal psychotherapy, experiential acceptance and emotional regulation. These findings represent a starting point to initiate new research and innovative trials that will lead to effective and efficient action plans and treatment protocols.
