Although invasive species suppose an obvious threat to biodiversity and a serious environmental management problem, they could represent an alternative for certain social uses due to possible applications. Some qualities as invaders are the great production of biomass that they generate in the eradication processes and their capacity to produce toxic or allelopathic compounds that could inhibit microorganisms. Taking into account the resistance that many microorganisms develop, the interest in the search for new biocides derived from plants and, in particular, from invasive species, is evident.
In this work, the in vitro antifungal and antibacterial capacity of the invasive species Robinia pseudoacacia, Solanum bonariense and Oxalis pes-caprae has been studied. The extracts were prepared with acetone, methanol and ethanol and their antimicrobial activity against the fungi Alternaria, Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium and Phytophthora citrophthora and the bacteria Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus epidermidis was developed using the techniques of direct application of the extracts to the medium and by disk diffusion test.
Variable results were observed, depending on the plant, the extractant and the target organism. The highest yield was obtained with the methanol extractant, and the highest efficiency, in general, with the ethanolic extracts. R. pseudoacacia and S. bonariense showed good capacity to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Micrococcus luteus bacteria, considered more sensitive, as well as the fungi Botrytis cinerea and Phytophthora citrophthora, while O.pes-caprae showed more scattered results. The suitability of the techniques and extractants used is discussed.
