Abstract:
Introduction: Achilles tendinopathies lead to changes in the function, pain and structure of the Achilles tendon. These changes affect their ability to resist and generate forces, both in the actions of daily life and in sports. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is among the most common conservative treatments of choice, often combined with other treatments.
Objectives: to know the current scientific evidence of ESWT in patients with Achilles tendinopathy, comparing it or not, or combining it with other treatments.
Methods: A bibliographic search has been carried out in the PubMed, Cochrane and WOS databases, in an attempt to find out the scientific evidence about ESWT in Achilles tendinopathies. The Boolean operators AND and OR have been used in the search string.
Results: 10 articles were reviewed, of which 3 used ESWT alone, 4 combined it with eccentric exercises, 2 compared it with injections in the tendon and 1 one of the studies reported a rupture after application. The most common measures were the VAS scale and the VISA-A questionnaire.
Conclusion: There is no clear evidence that ESWT treatment can provide long-term benefits. On the other hand, in treatments that combine eccentric exercises and other conservative treatments have shown the best short- and long-term results
