Background: Shoulder Impingement Syndrome (SIS) is the main cause of shoulder pain in society. It is multifactorial and tends to be chronic, which is why changes un muscle activation patterns may appear. For this reason, the literature attempts to answer the possible differences in muscle activation between subjects with SIS and healthy subjects. Objectives: To evaluate, through the scientific literature, the differences in shoulder muscle activation by electromyography (EMG) in subjects with SIS vs healthy controls. Material and methods: A bibliographic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, in the databases: PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and Science Direct. Cross-sectional studies, published from 2006 onwards, were reviewed and the modified Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess methodological quality. Results/Discussion: A total of 17 cross-sectional studies were included. In general, SIS patients were found to have higher upper trapezius activity and lower trapezius and serratus anterior activity. In terms of activation time, early activation of the upper trapezius, anterior and middle deltoid, and delayed activation of serratus anterior were observed. Conclusion: Subjects with SIS present different muscle activation pattern than healthy individuals. This review reinforces the limited evidence that exists in relation to the subject described and recommends EMG as a tool to be used to evaluate possible deficits in subjects with SIS.
