Introduction: temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are defined as a group of pathologies put together by the orofacial pain that affects the temporomandibular joints, the chewing muscles and the musculoskeletal structures of head and neck. Its etymology is multifactorial. Data shows that 40 to 60% of global population suffers from at least one symptom of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Also, this symptomathology can significantly alter your life quality.
Objectives: To compare if there exists differences between the therapeutical exercise and manual therapy as treatment for temporomandibular disorders. Materials and methods: The articles used was extracted from Pubmed, Scopus and Cochrane data bases. The selected studies are from those published in the last ten years given thatthey were clinical studies and that they involved fisiotherapeutical treatment. Those who had severe illnesses associated, who were odontological or quirurgical treatments, whose case studiesweren’t TMDs or those who weren’t including manual therapy or therapeutical exercise were excluded. The methodological quality was determined using the PEDro scale.
Results: 18 articles were examined. We could observe that the chosen techniques were positive for TMD treatment. However, we can’t find enough evidence to show the superiority of those therapies. The most used diagnostic protocol for temporomandibular disorders was the RDC/TMD system. Conclusion: We cannot guarantee the superiority of one therapy over the other, but we can guarantee the effectiveness of both of them and we can guarantee that there exists a synergic effect when both are applied jointly.
