Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) can be significantly impaired in terms of their ability to move. This disability can affect not only walking and hand function, but also speech and the ability to suck, chew, and swallow. These affectations can lead to a significant deterioration in feeding capacity and, eventually, to malnutrition, and lead to the following health problems; respiratory infections, producto of aspiration during feeding, (they are the main cause of mortality in children with CP), dysphagia, reflux and malnutrition.
Furthermore, it should be considered that feeding time can increase considerably and, instead of being a pleasurable experience, mealtimes can be distressing for both child and caregiver. This guide has been carried out through a review of the literature and current evidence, with the aim of developing information on feeding/swallowing difficulties and/or malnutrition aimed at professionals, caregivers of people with non-collaborative CP. Providing the necessary information on the most relevant points to consider.
The guide is structured in several sections in which the following contents are dealt with; Introduction (what is Pc and related, we give basic notions about dysphagia, malnutrition, constipation and reflux) postural control, feeding techniques, swallowing maneuvers, diet and oral hygiene, adaptations of food and textures, support products, adaptations of food and textures, support products, adaptations of the environment, coordination with the family and multidisciplinary team involved in feeding people with non-cooperative CP.
