Introduction: Perineal massage is a widely-recommended practice during pregnancy that aims at reducing perineal trauma. Despite this, episiotomy and perineal tear rates are still very high at both national and global scale. Objectives: The general objective is to demonstrate the effectiveness of a theoretical-practical training programme in perineal massage aimed at pregnant women and their partners and focused on reducing intrapartum tears in Lleida Primary Healthcare area. Methods: A cluster clinical trial will be undertaken through an intervention with the aim of reducing the number of intrapartum perineal tears. The outcome variable —having a tear— will be measured by the professional assisting in the delivery. The intervention group will participate in a theoretical-practical threesession programme in perineal massage led by a midwife in their Primary Healthcare center. The control group will receive the usual treatment. Fear of childbirth will be measured for both groups before and after the intervention, whereas perineal pain and sexual dysfunction will be monitored at postpartum. The data will be analysed through univariate descriptive analysis for quantitative and qualitative variables, hypothesis testing and correlation between variables, using appropriate statistical tests and considering the results as significant when alpha value is p<0.05 and confidence interval is at 95%.
