Abstract:
Over 257 million people in the world have a chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The liver damage is determined by the interaction between the virus in the infected hepatocyte and the host’s immune system. During its replication cycle, the viral DNA forms covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA), which serves as a model for viral replication. Its persistence is responsible for the chronification of HBV infection and it can not be eliminated with various antivirals. A liver biopsy is required to determine quantification. Current HBV serological markers do not completely solve the issues with diagnosis and treatment decision making since these markers do not correlate with the hepatic cccDNA levels or viral transcription. Recently, it has been established the usefulness of a new serological marker, core-related antigen (AgHBcr). Due to its correlation with DNAccc, it becomes a potential marker for viral activity that could help make diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. To assess the usability of this marker (AgHBcr) in the daily clinic practice, we have carried out a prospective crosssectional study in a group of patients with chronic Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
