During the last 15 years Spain has been sunk into what could be called the longest race to prove what the newspaper that showed a bigger affinity to the states’ political parties was. Electoral propaganda and the big sum of money that mass media obtains by them end up becoming disinformation media at the service of high sectors instead of citizenship. Spain’s living a big moment of change, during which written and audio-visual media are unable to tell clear truths when talking about political corruption. The half-truths or manipulated information rhythm is alarming. Thus, it could be affirmed that “The Watergate case” in Spain wouldn’t give a simple footnote on the national newspapers’ cover pages. The opinion of newspapers’ readers really influences on their perception of the country’s occurrences and this opinion is directly derived from what they read in newspapers. For this reason, this Final Degree Project will analyse the media coverage of corruption scandals in Spain during 2011 and 2014 of two of the big mass media (ABC and El País) when publishing news about two concrete cases of political corruption. The two cases to be analysed will be the Gürtel plot, linked to the Partido Popular (PP) in which the illegal funding of such party also plays an important role, and the RER case in Andalusia, linked to the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE), which has been sentenced with an embezzlement of more than six hundred million of Euros. The obtained results shed light on party media coverage and big differences between both newspapers are identified, proving that in journalism, not everything goes and it must be at the service of the population, and not of political parties.
