An appropriate sleep is essential for the health and development in youth, since the lack of a good night's sleep causes cognitive, social, academic and emotional problems, among others. Insomnia is the main sleep problem of young people and adults, since around 8% of the general population suffers from chronic insomnia. The present study describes a cognitive-behavioural intervention, aimed at a 15-year-old adolescent with anxiety problems and insomnia (CBT-I). The aims of the treatment are to achieve sleepiness alone in her room, eliminate panic attacks at bedtime and in the middle of the night, and eliminate the behaviour of calling her mother in the middle of the night. The assessment process was conducted through a semi-structured interview with the patient and her mother, filling in mood, sleep disturbance and anxiety questionnaires, and a sleep diary. The first-line treatment was based on 12 sessions with empirically validated techniques such as graded exposure, cognitive restructuring and progressive muscle relaxation. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the intervention, displaying a reduction in sleep problems and an increase in the quality of life and patient’s satisfaction.
