Introduction: The delay in the healing of diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) is a major problem in the health of patients, a decrease in the quality of life of affected people and an increase in health cost. The negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a therapeutic modality that favors a correct healing generating the optimal conditions for it. It is necessay to evaluate the effectiveness of such therapy.
Objetive: To evaluate the effectiveness of negative pressure wound therapy in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, complications and cost.
Material and methods: A research was conducted in the period from November 2017 to January 2018. Different databases were used, including Pubmed, Academic Google, Dialnet and SciELO.
Results: A total of 18 articles are included in this review. Among these are observational studies, systematic reviews, randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and clinical cases.
Discussion: In the rewiewed studies it has been found that the use of NPWT is favorable compared to conventional treatment in DFU. The complications that usually appear are not serious and can also occur with conventional treatment.
Conclusion: There is no evidence to establish a superiority of NPWT compared to conventional treatment, standard moist wound therapy (SMWT). It is necessary to carry out future studies with a larger sample size.
