Children and young people who break the normative sexual and gender patterns still
suffer from a lack of emotional support within their families and educational centers. This leaves
them without emotional tools to cope with structural violence. Children's literature can be used to
spread knowledge, highlight different realities, and serve as a dialogue tool to address complex,
emotional and conceptual issues. The creation of the illustrated book La merienda (The Snack)
wants to meet the demands relating to the needs of diverse childhood. It is intended to help children
face the difficulties they must deal with when growing up in a cisheterosexist society, and to
encourage dialogue and intergenerational understanding. The creative process of the work is based
on an in-depth study of previous children's books that deal with this type of diversity in order to
assess the aesthetic, narrative and conceptual resources used, as well as the approach to the subject.
This research, and the project as a whole, has taken into account different perspectives that
intersect: feminism, queer theories and trans studies. Apart from that, the author's experience as a
trans person has also been used to create an autoethnographic exercise which addresses the archive
of emotions and the study of images and visuality, to provide the work with narrative and emotional
content. The work La merienda, is a silent illustrated book that deals with the complex relationships
between families, their expectations, and the experiences of children, many of which tend to remain
unnoticed. It is designed to be accessible without adult mediation and to be read in an open way
depending on the reader’s cultural background.
