Introduction: Lateral epicondylitis or tennis elbow is a frequent disease that affects men and women alike and it is defined by a deep pain in the area of the humeral epicondyle (lateral elbow) when a radial wrist deviation or dorsiflexion is produced. 90% of the patients are satisfactorily treated following a conservative treatment as physical therapy, with therapies as shock wave therapy and ultrasound therapy.
Objectives: Checking the effectiveness of shock wave therapy for soothing the pain which they could feel and to compare it with ultrasound therapy and placebo.
Materials and methods: A bibliographic search has been carried out in different databases as Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, PEDro and Cochrane between March and April 2021, finding an amount of 269 total articles, but with only 9 valid articles for this research.
Results: Pain always subsides when shock wave therapy is applied, accompanied with an improvement of life quality and better functionality in the affected arm. The pain decrease is reached with less therapy sessions in comparison with ultrasound therapy, obtaining short term benefits and keeping this pain decrease in the process.
Conclusions: Shock wave therapy is effective when reducing pain of people suffering lateral epicondylitis. Although we can not find differences between shock wave therapy and ultrasound therapy, their effectiveness is comparable. We can find some differences between shock wave therapy and placebo, obtaining better results for shock wave therapy.
