Introduction: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) affects joints bringing about inflammation, cartilage damage and physical function loss among other things. Strength training provides patients with analgesic effects and functional increase in weakened muscles as/for instance quadriceps and hip abductors.
Objectives: To know hip abductor muscles´ strength training effectiveness to reduce pain and improve physical function, also to get gait improvements in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Methods: A systematic review has been carried out searching at scientific databases: Pubmed, Embase, PEDro, Scopus and ScienceDirect. 8 trials have been obtained which analyze pain, physical function and in some cases gait also has been studied after a hip abductor muscles´ strength training.
Results: Evidence has been found for the combination of hip abductor with other muscles´ strength and stretching training to reduce pain and improve physical function. No significant results have been observed when compared with exclusively quadriceps´training (Q) or the sum of both muscles´ training (Q+A).
Conclusion: It has been considered as a useful way to improve physical function, gait and to decrease pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis. In contrast to knee adduction moment (KAM) which has not been shown to obtain better results. Further quality research on the topic is recommended.
