Health care continues to adopt a model focused on acute diseases and it is not fully prepared to meet all the needs of living with one or more chronic conditions. Furthermore, it focuses on patient outcomes without considering the needs of family caregivers, even though it has been shown that patient's well-being influence on it. For this reason, the aim is to evaluate the needs of these patients and their family caregivers in the daily management of the disease and, on the other hand, to compare the needs presented by these two groups. To this end, a qualitative study of five focus groups was carried out in which 39 patients and 22 caregivers participated. Most of them had diabetes as a pathology. The ideas of the groups were accounted for consistency and spontaneity. The needs expressed by both patients and caregivers were treatment adherence, information about the disease and treatment, more comprehensive care from health professionals, and more psychological and financial support. While patients placed more emphasis on the need for better health care, caregivers focused on the need for psychological support. The role of the health psychologist in developing interventions to cover the needs outlined in this paper could be a potential resource to help these people take more active control of their health.
