The birth of television in Spain has been a turning point for media development. Since then, television has become since then the main information and knowledge mass medium i. In close proximity with Televisión Española in 1956, Spanish television became a new reality for culture-diffusion and was the main means of entertainment. Ten years later, regional television channels were created, due to the State decentralisation in regions and as a response to public demands.
As a result of this, the Valencian broadcasting corporation (Radio Televisión Valenciana or RTVV) was conceived in 1989 to provide the Valencian region with public radio and television broadcasting services. Their first broadcasts go back to 9th October 1989 –the Region of Valencia day–, providing the premiere a symbol of defence of Valencian culture in association with the rest of society. In order to establish a proper communication net, the corporation opened provincial branches across the region. The provincial branch in Alicante is responsible for the development of a journalism that is close to citizens across the province of Alicante. During the first years, their team consisted only of a few members and the headquarters was located in an office building in Avenida de Aguilera. However, when the People’s Party came into office, this was transformed into a program production centre in 2002, and more than 180 staff members formed the team.
Nevertheless, the problems originated by an inadequate management of the public funding, the over-sizing of the staff team, the lack of political pluralism on a public channel, and the inappropriate use of content to issue political propaganda were some of the reasons why, in 2013, Radio Televisión Valenciana became the first regional corporation to be closed by a court order.
