Introduction: Premature delivery occurs before 37 weeks of gestation, considering extremely premature, very premature, moderate or late premature babies, depending on their gestational age. This condition entails a series of sequelae in the orofacial region, which can be enhanced due to medicine advances that guarantee the survival of the newborn. Therefore, physiotherapy intervention during hospital admission is necessary to reduce these sequelae and improve the baby's development and quality of life.
Objetive: To know the effects of the different orofacial stimulation techniques used in premature infants hospitalized in the NICU.
Methodology: A bibliographic search was performed in the Pubmed, Cochrane, PEDro and Scopus databases, using the boolean operators "AND" and "OR" and the filters "clinical trial", "randomized clinical trial", "last 10 years" and "in English or Spanish".
Results: 17 articles were selected among which 4 main interventions were used: PIOMI, the Fucile program, NNS and OMS. A relationship was found between the application of these techniques and feeding performance, transition time to oral feeding, sucking and breastfeeding skills, infant weight at discharge and days of hospitalization.
Conclusions: Orofacial stimulation positively influences the feeding process of the premature infant without increasing comorbidities, even more so if it is complemented with other physiotherapy techniques.
