Introduction: Frailty is the progressive age-related deterioration of physiological system leading to a
decline in reserves of intrinsic capacity, which confers increased vulnerability to stressors and
increases the risk of adverse health outcomes. So-called multicomponent exercise has been shown to
have the greatest benefits and is based on a combination of strength, endurance, balance and gait
training. The Vivifrail project aims to create an individualized multicomponent training programme
according to the individual’s degree of limitation as determined by gait speed, SPPB score and a falls
risk assessment.
Objectives: The main purpose of this work is to determine the effectiveness of the Vivifrail
Programme in relation to the prevention and/or reversibility of frailty in people aged 70 and over. As
well as to assess its effects on the risk of falls, quality of life, cognitive impairment and functional
status.
Methods: A search was carried out in PubMed, EMBASE and Scopus databases using the keyword
“Vivifrail”. The filters added were: published in the last 10 years; human; language in English and
Spanish; and clinical trials and observational studies.
Results: A total of 7 studies assessing frailty, functional capacity, risk of falls, cognitive impairment
and quality of life were selected.
Conclusion: The multicomponent exercise programme is effective in preventing and reversing frailty,
as well as improving functional capacity and cognitive decline.
