Introduction
Quality of life in patients with late diagnosis of HIV has been associated in the literature
with poorer quality of life.
Hypothesis and objective
Our hypothesis is that patients with a late diagnosis (initial diagnosis of AIDS or initial
CD4+ count of <100 cells/µL) have poorer quality of life. The objective is to describe the
quality of life of patients with late diagnosis and study the associated variables.
Methodology
Observational cross-sectional study of cohorts of patients from our hospital with late
diagnosis of HIV. Sociodemographic and immunovirological variables, presence of
comorbidities and quality of life were studied with the WHOQOL-HIV-BRIEF, 5Q-5D5L questionnaires and the VAS scale. The possible relationships between the variables
and the results of the quality of life questionnaires are studied.
Results
The quality of life in our patients is not clearly affected. During follow-up they present
more comorbidities and better immunovirological control. Despite not finding
statistically significant findings, an association was observed between a low CD4+
lymphocyte count and a high viral load at diagnosis with poorer quality of life after at
least 5 years of follow-up.
Conclusions
The initial results of our study indicate that patients with very low CD4+ lymphocyte
counts at diagnosis have poorer quality of life after more than 5 years of follow-up.
