Traditionally, the city of Elche has been known worldwide as the cradle of
footwear. It is in this municipality where shoes were made and now continue to be
assembled by many companies and multinationals that are in charge of marketing and
distributing them around the world, bearing the seal of Elche. However, since the Spanish
Tax Agency published two reports last year that pointed out the city of Elche as the
poorest municipality in Spain, the informal economy generated in this town, through the
shoe industry, has been in the spotlight. According to one of these reports, the
neighbourhood of Carrús has the lowest income in the country. The main reason: many
of the families that live in this area, and are linked to the footwear sector, work without a
contract. Shoe assemblers, the main link in the chain of the manufacture of a shoe, despite
being one of the cornerstones of the footwear industry, is one of the most precarious
collectives and the one through which informal economy continues to be maintained.
