Introduction: The diaphragm is the main inspiratory muscle; It is innervated by the phrenic nerve that arises from the C3 - C5 nerve roots. Inspiratory muscle training (IMT) could aid recovery from diaphragm paralysis by improving diaphragmatic mobility, inspiratory muscle strength, quality of life, dyspnea, and exercise tolerance.
Objectives: To know, according to scientific evidence, if IMT is beneficial to increase inspiratory muscle strength, quality of life, exercise capacity and dyspnea in adults with peripheral affectation of the phrenic nerve or its roots to medullary level.
Material and methods: The methodology used to carry out this study has been carried out through the Pubmed, Scopus, PEDro, Cochrane and Embase databases.
Results: 7 articles were found that met the inclusion criteria. The IMT intervention protocol was varied in each of the articles in relation to the intensity and duration of the treatment.
Conclusion: The IMT in adult patients with phrenic nerve affectation could improve inspiratory muscle strength, decrease dyspnea, improve the quality of activities of daily living, respiratory pattern and exercise capacity. It is observed that there is no consensus among the authors when specifying treatment parameters or how to carry out the IMT protocol.
