A copycat crime involves a previous, publicized event, which serves as a motivation
or example for the copycat offender. In addition to individual and sociocultural factors,
the importance of media coverage and its dissemination mechanism plays a special
role in the concept of copycat crime.
However, research on the copycat is limited, while in recent years the media and the
audiovisual industry have published news and films pointing out this characteristic,
either in reality or in fiction.
This paper approaches the term copycat from a criminological point of view to study
the main characteristics of the copycat effect investigated by different authors.
Likewise, by means of a systematic review of twelve studies from the last thirty years,
the aim is to prove or disprove each of the four hypotheses formulated in the research
objectives, having to do with the definition of the copycat effect itself, the field it
affects, the influence of the media and the sex of the copycat offenders. The results are
intended to demonstrate the research on the subject, the analysis of the knowledge
dealt with and the lack of deepening in this matter. To conclude, the result obtained from this study is oriented to the deepening of the
term to open new avenues of study that may lead to clear guidelines to establish a
crime as copycat.
