Environmental sustainability is a perennial human problem. The controversy around it entered contemporary society after the publication of The Limits To Growth in 1972, splitting public and academic opinion into cornucopians and catastrophists. Amongst the proposals made to solve this problem is economic degrowth, which preconizes a reduction in material welfare in order to attain sustainability and, we argue, should be best defined as reduction in the depreciation of natural capital. Since the first appearance of the term, the question of the compatibility of degrowth with the capitalist system has been raised, and disdain towards the free market system prevails amongst degrowth proponents. We analyze the political and economical objections that have been raised against the compatibility of capitalism with degrowth, finding that most of them either are not specifically relevant to capitalism, render themselves invalid if a cap is put on resource throughput, or can be solved without need of a change of the economic system. We conclude that it is not only possible, but preferable that degrowth take place within a free market environment, and also that this proposal may represent a synthesis of the cornucopian and catastrophist positions, taking into account both the valid contributions and errors of the two currents of thought.
