This research paper deals with the evolution of audiences of the musical talent show Operación Triunfo, an entertainment format that began airing on TVE in 2001 with a remarkable audience success. This music contest alternately remained on the grids of the public network and Tele 5 for 11 editions until it was eliminated by the sharp decline in the ratings. Initially, Operación Triunfo aired on TVE; later it became part of the private network Telecinco and in the last two editions it was reissued on the public network.
The purpose of this study is to observe whether during all its editions the contest has obtained good audience data or if, on the contrary, it has failed in some of them and what could be the motivation for these alterations in the share. We will also emphasize the changes that have been produced in the format depending on the string in which it was broadcast, how it was received by the audience after the stop before the last two editions and how they have been able to adapt to the new technologys and social media.
The information used to x-ray the evolution of Operación Triunfo is extracted from the documentation published by different media specialized in television as well as from the website of the format producer, Gestmusic. In addition, the audience data published by Ymedia, Windward Communication and the Formula TV portal have been checked. Social media has also been tracked through the official account of the program and that of the contestants, as well as the hashtags of each gala. Finally, content of the program has been viewed through the RTVE website and the Youtube channel.
