Enfermos y enfermedades en Alcoy a finales del Siglo XIX y principios del XX

Abstract

En un estudio anterior valoramos la necesidad y las posibilidades que ofrecía la creación del hospital civil de Oliver en Alcoy, así como su evolución como entidad y recurso sanitario. En el presente estudio pretendemos hacer una revisión sobre las causas de morbi-mortalidad entre la población alcoyana a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, para comprobar cuan de determinante fue el papel del mencionado hospital. Pasaremos a valorar tanto las causas, como la estacionalidad, la relación con la edad y comprobaremos la incidencia de las distintas epidemias en esa época, especialmente la de cólera y la de la gripe. No vamos a ser exhaustivos ni a repetir la importancia del ambiente y la relación entre las condiciones de vida con el proceso de enfermar, pero es obligatorio mencionar estos aspectos, pues se establece una relación directa entre las distintas patologías y el ambiente laboral, las condiciones de vivienda, de higiene y de alimentación, es decir, entre la vida cotidiana y la salud, sobre todo entre la clase obrera alcoyana. Podemos observar la evolución de las enfermedades y su relación con las mejoras en salud, higiene, nutrición, etc., principalmente debido a los esfuerzos de las Juntas Municipales de Salud para paliar los estragos de las malas condiciones de vida. Terminaremos el estudio con una lista de los determinantes de morbilidad más importantes en Alcoy en ese momento histórico.

In a previous study, we assessed the need and possibilities offered by the creation of Oliver's civil hospital in Alcoy, as well as its evolution as a health entity and resource. In this study we intend to review the causes of morbidity and mortality among the population of Alcoy at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, we can observe how determining the role of the mentioned hospital was. We will go on to assess both the causes, such as seasonality, the relationship with age and we will check the incidence of the different epidemics at that time, especially that of cholera and influenza. We are not going to be exhaustive or repeat the importance of the environment and the relationship between living conditions and the process of becoming ill, but it is mandatory to mention these aspects, since a direct relationship is established between the different pathologies and the work environment, the conditions housing, hygiene and food. In other words, between daily life and health, especially among the Alcoy working class. We can observe the evolution of diseases and their relationship with improvements in terms of health, hygiene, nutrition, etc. Mainly due to the efforts of the Municipal Health Boards to alleviate the ravages of poor living conditions. We will finish the study with a list of the most important determining factors regarding morbidity in Alcoy at that historical moment
