In Spain, one in ten people have some type of disability, according to the latest State
Database on Persons with Disabilities, updated in 2016. This study shows that in Spain
there are 277,472 individuals with a degree of intellectual disability recognized equal or
superior to 33%, of which 57% are men and 43% are women.
Sport plays a key role in the fight for the integration of these people and also in the
improvement of their physical and psychological capacities. There are many projects that are
based on helping people with disabilities through sports, such as Deportes Sin Adjetivos, the
first sports club for them founded in Elche (Alicante). However, the visibility of this type of
project is scarce, so the release of the film Champions (Campeones) , directed by Javier
Fesser, has been a great step for people with disabilities, who usually remain outside the
screens, to be treated as someone else and not like the different one.
