This work aims to expose the vision of one of the main foreign correspondents during
the Spanish Civil War, Henry Buckley, through his book The Life and Death of the
Spanish Republic.
To this end, various aspects of some fragments of the work will be analysed, reflecting
the main moral and political concerns of the British journalist during the Second
Republic and the Spanish conflict. Specifically, the questions that will be investigated in
this work are the following: the Non-Intervention Pact and its main consequences; the
International Brigades and their relevance in the war; the religious conflict in Spain and
its repercussion in society; and, finally, the Republican exile to France. In addition,
various publications on these subjects will be studied in an attempt to place the author's
views in a particular context.
The purpose of this work is also to characterize and study the journalistic-literary style
that Buckley uses throughout the work. In addition, it will be analysed whether the
immediacy represented by the chronicle conditions the author's thinking about the facts
he narrates in the book and to what degree this chronicle is later reflected in the work.
Buckley's chronicle entitled "The New Strong Army of Republican Spain", published in
January 1938 in The Daily Telegraph and published by José Mario Armero in his book
España fue noticia, will be used for this purpose.
