The body self-perception is done unconsciously by the brain continuously. It is assumed that everything we perceive fits completely into reality. But on the contrary, body illusions can deceive our perception, as is the case of the rubber hand illusion. This illusion allows a subject to feel as his own a hand that is actually false. The neurobiological mechanisms responsible for the illusion include the somatosensitive system and the visual system, since fine touch, proprioception and sight are the three basic components necessary to create the feeling of ownership of the rubber hand. In addition, the illusion is influenced by various personal factors and involves different brain structures. Also, the self-body perception is an interesting field that is not yet fully developed, especially bodily illusions that in the future could be used to develop clinical applications, thus improving the lives of many people who suffer pathologies related to alterations of the multisensory integration by the brain.
