Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a persistent practice which affects 200 million victims globally and
there are approximately 3 million women at risk annually. The consequences of this practice
adversely affect physical and psychological health on a permanent basis. Furthermore, the Valencian
Community is the fourth community in Spain with the highest prevalence of female population from
practicing countries. In the present work, a proposal for a prevention program is put forward in order
to reduce the number of women subjected to FGM through working with relatives of pre-adolescents
under 14 years old at risk in the Valencian Community. It is proposed as a complementary tool for
health action protocol in this region, in order to achieve a multidisciplinary preventive approach. This
program consists of 7 workshops dedicated to the acquisition of basic knowledge on sexual and
reproductive health, human rights, legality and myths about ablation, as well as the development of
skills in emotional expression, communication of decisions and critical capacity. For these purposes,
a comprehensive bibliographical review was carried out and 5 experts in the field of FGM were
interviewed, who brought to light the low visibility of the psychologist as a health agent in these
contexts, and the high necessity for psychological counselling within these groups.
