In the present study, the design of an intervention programme though cognitive
stimulation (CS), its application and the results of a clinical study is described, using a
design of a base line (A-B), of a 83-year-old man with a major Neurocognitive Disorder
probably due to Alzheimer´s disease, who presents behavioural alteration and his case is
moderately serious. The purpose of the intervention is that the patient keeps or increases
the cognitive domains (CD) affected in order to slow down the worsening symptoms of the illness. In order to do so, a few CS activities that proved effective to ameliorate or
mantain the cognitive functions have been conducted. The evaluation of the patient was
shown through a few instruments that measure the different CD as well as the patient’s
functionality. The treatment consisted of 48 sessions, with a duration of 45 minures
each, twice a week. To evaluate the results, the same tests used in the inicial evaluation
were used again, and pre and post treatment data was compared. The results show that
the treatment through cognitive stimulation is effective, since, in general, the patient has
continued using the cognitive processes which were moderately altered. By ways of
conclusion, it is clear that the pharmaceutical therapy along with the psycological
therapy through cognitive stimulation programmes could help maintain the overall state
of the patient even in the more advanced stages.
