Neuropsychological rehabilitation is effective in management and control of neurological
disorders and disabilities, behavioral and emotional disorders in patients with acquired brain
damage. Actually, the debate is about if the therapeutic possibilities are beyond the
spontaneous recovery period. This research, is a longitudinal and the core group study with
pre-post test measures, analyzes the functionality parameters in patients diagnosed with brain
damage acquired after a late-onset neuropsychological rehabilitation program. The hypothesis
showed was; the recovery is still possible even if specialized treatment is delayed in time.
Data were collected from different variables; sociodemographics, clinical, treatment-related
and functional capacity to perform basic activities of daily living. A total of 19 patients were
referred, 12 diagnosed stroke and 7 brain tumor, all homogeneous in sex, age, duration and
delaying treatment. In the functional capacity evaluation pre-post was used The Barthel
Index test. The qualitative variables analysis was performed by the Chi-square test,
quantitative variables with Mann-Whitney U test and Wilcoxon signed- rank, taking into a
value of p <0,05. The results show statistics significant difference between the test pre and
post measure functional in the controlled variables, underscore a functional capacity increase
and independence between both groups (intragroup and intergroup).
According to the results, the late onset neuropsychological rehabilitation is reliable increasing
the functionality in acquired brain damage.
