Prevention of adolescent gambling: A pilot efficacy trial in school setting. The increasing prevalence of gambling among teenagers is a main concern.
In Spain, despite the high demand for preventive interventions, the implementation of school programs for the prevention of gambling abuse
is recent, and there is still no evidence of its effectiveness. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the universal prevention
program in the educational field “Que te juegas? (QTJ?) “. 330 high school students participated in two groups: control (n = 91) and experimental
(n = 239). The experimental group received three sessions of 50 minutes each. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a matched control
group was used. Participants in the experimental condition significantly reduced the Intention to Gamble (t = 3.156, d = .16), the Risk Perception (t
= 2.933, d = .21), the Attitude in favor of Gambling Advertising (t = 5.736; d = .33) and Cognitive Bias about Probability (t = 7.063; d = .49), while
Self-Efficacy for not Gambling increased (t = -3.922 d = .24). No pre-post changes were recorded in the control group. The “QTJ?” Program has
evidence in favor of its effectiveness when compared to the control condition. We discuss the methodological difficulties that limit validity. The need
to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at preventing the abuse of gambling among minors is highlighted.
