Biosolids or sewage sludge are an important type of waste resulting from different wastewater treatment processes. The commitment to collect and treat wastewater, coming from the different European regulations, involves an important economic cost. Therefore the recycle of the byproducts obtained from these processes becomes a necessity within the framework of sustainable development and the circular economy. The biosolids contains suspended or dissolved materials, some of them with high agronomic value such as organic matter and different macronutrients and micronutrients. For this reason the application to soils has great potential and especially in soils with low organic matter content such as Mediterranean soil and in particular those that support olive groves.
There are numerous papers and reports such as those revised in the present document that show, regardless of the type of crop (herbaceous and most woody), and in most soils and soil and climatic conditions, that the agricultural use of sewage sludge in any of its treatments, produces more beneficial than negative effects on soil physical, chemical and biological properties and on the development and productivity of the crops.
However, in the cultivation of olive groves, both the personal experiences mentioned in the report and those included in the literature showed negative reactions in the development and productivity of the olive trees and in very few cases the results of the application have been positive or even innocuous. For this reason it is concluded that if there is an interest to use biosolids as amendments in olive grove, a detailed investigation and monitoring that depict the causes of the possible negative effects is needed. It is necessary to offer security to the farmers or if this safety is compromised the use of biosolid in this olive grove must be discarded.
