Coping, affection and tobacco in a sample of Spanish adolescents. During adolescence, risky behaviors for health, such as tobacco use, are usually
initiated. In smoking behaviors, existing empirical evidence indicates the importance, among others, of personal and psychosocial factors. This study
aims to analyze the contribution of coping style and affect in tobacco consumption in adolescents, as well as the influence exerted by both sex and
age. In a sample of 199 adolescents (M = 17.09 years, SD = 1.84, 51.75% were girls), the relationships between coping strategies and affect with
tobacco consumption were analyzed. The results showed that this consumption was positively and significantly related to age, sex and unproductive
coping strategies, presenting coping strategies focused on the problem in a meaningful negative relationship. Positive affect was related in a positive
and significant way with more productive coping strategies, being the relationship of negative affect in the same way, but in this case, with unproductive
coping. The results are discussed taking into account the importance and relevance of affectivity and coping strategies in risk behaviors
in adolescents (such as tobacco use). Therefore, the responsibility to carry out orientations and interventions that imply a positive affectivity and a
start-up, on the part of the young people, of productive strategies of confrontation before the difficulties that they had to face.
