Abstract:
Introduction: the postpartum period is characterized as a stage of particular physical and psychological vulnerability, during which symptoms of postpartum depression or anxiety may arise, as well as alterations in the quality of life of postpartum women. Engaging in physical activity during pregnancy has been associated with health benefits for women, including a reduction in postpartum mental health disorders. Objective: to determine whether engaging in physical exercise during the prenatal period is associated with the presence of postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms, as well as with self-perceived quality of life in postpartum women receiving care at the Cartagena-Este Health Center. Methodology: an analytical observational retrospective cohort study is proposed. The target population will consist of women receiving postpartum care in Primary Care over the course of one calendar year. A comparison will be made between women who engaged in physical exercise during pregnancy and those who did not. Data will be collected through self-reported interviews recorded in an Excel spreadsheet, and validated questionnaires will be administered six weeks postpartum: the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, WHOQOL-BREF, and PSAS-ES-RSF. The analysis will include descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and multivariate models. Applicability: the findings of this study could provide evidence regarding the benefits of prenatal physical exercise on mental health and quality of life during the postpartum period, supporting the design of preventive strategies and the promotion of healthy habits through midwifery consultations in Primary Care.
