Abstract:
This final-year dissertation addresses the need to explore in greater depth the motivational climate in youth federated sport, as this is a variable that has a decisive influence on the motivation, well-being and retention of young athletes. During formative years, the environment created by the coach can either foster the athlete’s optimal development or, conversely, lead to frustration, demotivation and withdrawal from sport. It is therefore particularly important to analyse which types of motivational climates are associated with more adaptive outcomes and which strategies can help coaches foster more favourable environments.
Furthermore, this topic is of clear practical interest, as in federated clubs it is not only important to provide players with technical training, but also to address the psychological factors surrounding their sporting experience. In this regard, understanding validated tools for assessing the motivational climate and effective programmes for improving it enables scientific evidence to be applied to the reality of youth teams. Consequently, this study is justified by the need to compile, organise and analyse the available research in order to provide a useful overview from both an academic and an applied perspective.
