Abstract:
Non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors (Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, NSSI) represent a major public health problem in the child and adolescent population, especially due to their future relationship with psychopathology, functional impairment, and suicide risk. The objective of the present systematic review was to identify and analyze the available empirical evidence from the last 26 years on NSSI prevention programs in children aged 6 to 12 years. The review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines (Page et al., 2021) and the inclusion criteria were structured according to the PICO model (Richardson et al., 1995). Studies related to universal, selective, or indicated prevention of NSSI in school, community, or clinical settings were included, targeting children between 6 and 12 years of age, with experimental or quasi-experimental designs and written in English or Spanish. Studies that were not aimed at reducing NSSI, that focused on populations outside the established age range, without a control group, or those not in Spanish or English were excluded. The literature search was conducted in the PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, and ERIC databases. A total of 1,893 articles were identified, of which only one study met all the established inclusion criteria at the end of the process, corresponding to the program Fostering Healthy Futures for Preteens (FHF-P). This is the first systematic review focused on the prevention of NSSI in children aged 6 to 12 years, and the results show the scarcity of research focused on this area, highlighting the need to develop new preventive interventions and longitudinal studies that allow strengthening the available evidence and preventing the emergence of this type of behavior in later stages of life development.
