Sin embargo, el aumento del turismo plantea un reto constante entre la necesidad de crecimiento económico y la responsabilidad de proteger los espacios naturales. Este conflicto ha impulsado el apoyo al turismo sostenible, una forma de viajar que busca dejar una huella positiva en el entorno, cuidando el medioambiente y fomentando el conocimiento del paisaje y las costumbres locales. El turismo sostenible en Elche se enfoca en integrar la actividad turística con el respeto al entorno, promoviendo rutas interpretativas, medios de transporte sostenibles y el consumo de productos locales como los alimentos de la tierra o los lugares históricos. Aunque el municipio aún no ha alcanzado el estatus de destino turístico de referencia, se están realizando esfuerzos mediante planes que avanzan hacia ese objetivo, con acciones centradas en la transición ecológica, la eficiencia energética, la digitalización y la mejora de la competitividad. No obstante, existe preocupación por la masificación y el impacto de nuevas infraestructuras, como la posible ampliación del aeropuerto o la construcción en suelo rústico. Es fundamental descentralizar el turismo y distribuirlo mejor por el territorio para evitar la saturación de ciertos espacios. La educación desempeña un papel esencial en este proceso, preparando a las futuras generaciones para contribuir a un modelo turístico más consciente. En definitiva, el porvenir del turismo en Elche depende de encontrar un equilibrio justo entre desarrollo económico y protección del patrimonio, fomentando un crecimiento que garantice la sostenibilidad a largo plazo sin sacrificar el valor natural y cultural que distingue a la ciudad.

It is essential to decentralize tourism and better distribute it throughout the region to avoid overcrowding in certain areas. Education plays an essential role in this process, preparing future generations to contribute to a more conscious tourism model. Ultimately, the future of tourism in Elche depends on finding a fair balance between economic development and heritage protection, fostering growth that ensures long-term sustainability without sacrificing the natural and cultural value that distinguishes the city.
