Cifras y triples: un pódcast sobre estadística avanzada en la Liga Endesa

Abstract

La estadística avanzada ha transformado el análisis del baloncesto moderno, pero ¿hasta qué punto en el baloncesto europeo? Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado (TFG) analiza la aplicación real, los desafíos y las limitaciones de estas herramientas en la Liga Endesa (ACB). Tomé como referencia la ACB porque es la liga de mayor exigencia y nivel de Europa, donde la mayoría de ligas apenas tienen equipos competitivos. Además, cuenta con equipos presentes y candidatos a todas las competiciones europeas. A través de la creación de Cifras y Triples, un pódcast de cinco episodios, se da respuesta a esta pregunta desde todos los puntos de vista. Gracias a los testimonios de la gran mayoría de los profesionales del sector - entrenadores, analistas, directivos y periodistas - se evidencia cómo la estadística avanzada influye en prácticamente todos los aspectos, pero también se ponen de manifiesto los problemas significativos en su correcta interpretación y contextualización, con riesgos de caer en métricas engañosas o análisis superficiales. Además, se da voz a los que comunican esas estadísticas y las limitaciones y complejidades de acceder a esos datos, así como generar interés en algo tan complejo de entender a veces. También se revela una importante brecha tecnológica y de acceso abierto a los datos en comparación con la NBA. La conclusión que se extrae es que la estadística es como un GPS, te dice por donde tienes que ir pero tienes que ser tú el que le ponga la dirección y el que vaya mirando la carretera.

Advanced statistics have transformed modern basketball analysis, but to what extent in European basketball? This Final Degree Project (TFG) analyzes the real-world application, challenges, and limitations of these tools in the Liga Endesa (ACB). I took the ACB as a reference because it is the most demanding and highest-level league in Europe, where most leagues barely have competitive teams. Furthermore, it features teams that are present and contenders in all European competitions. Through the creation of “Cifras y Triples,” a five-episode pódcast, this question is answered from all points of view. Thanks to testimonies from the vast majority of professionals in the sector – coaches, analysts, executives, and journalists – it becomes evident how advanced statistics influence practically all aspects. However, significant problems in their correct interpretation and contextualization are also highlighted, with the risks of falling into misleading metrics or superficial analyses. Additionally, it gives a voice to those who communicate these statistics, discussing the limitations and complexities of accessing such data, as well as generating interest in something that can be so complex to understand at times. An important technological and open-data access gap compared to the NBA is also revealed. The conclusion drawn is that statistics are like a GPS: they tell you where to go, but you are the one who must set the direction and keep an eye on the road.
