Spain, 2016. The power execised by People's Party and Socialist Party since 1982 with
their relative and absolute majories has finished in the next-to-last general election. For
ten terms, both have taken control of the houses of parliaments to govern in order to
their own interets and far from the needs of the citizens. In addition, the eagerness of
power and richness have brought them, in some cases, to create new difficulties or be
protagonist of countless corruption plots.
This situation, along with the 2007-2008 financial and economic crisis, created
the perfect background for the "awakening" of the citizens, because until then, most of
the population stayed out of politics. This annoyance had its maximum expression in
15M Movement inspired by Greece, Arab Spring and Iceland protests. Thousands of
"indignados" went to the squares and the streets of Spain to claim a real change in the
way the system works, in order to build a fairer and more democratic State. Due to diverse factors, the 15M Movement's presence lessened in less than a
year. Nevertheless, a lot of its participants and sympathizers started to think up new
projects which were based on its principles. In the same way, other people who wasn't
involved in campings and protest saw in this disolution a great oportunity to get more
involved in national politics and the fight for Spanish people rights. And that is how
new civic platforms and parties were born.
The last actors have turned out the most benefited of current situation. Their
extraordinary ability to get adapted to the environment have made them rise to the top
of politics in a record time. Consequently, both major parties have lost an important part
of their representation and the parliaments are now more pluralistic than ever.
It has passed a short time since that and we can't talk about regeneration but
about intentions and minor changes. Furthermore, there are certain behaviors from the
old parties that we can also see in the new ones, which are really alarming.
