Abstract:

Visual Display Units (VDUs) are essential in most current jobs as they serve as the interface between the worker and the computer. With the increasing impact of new technologies on jobs and the growing need for visual information, as well as the rising time spent viewing data screens, workers using VDU equipment may experience specific pathologies resulting from prolonged use, such as Visual Fatigue, Musculoskeletal Disorders, and Mental Fatigue. In environments like emergency departments, where the attending physician is a key component in the backbone of these healthcare services, other factors such as continuous 24-hour shifts, job rotations, high workload, and responsibility add up, potentially exacerbating health risks for the staff. Therefore, it is crucial to implement specific and participatory preventive measures to address these challenges and improve the working conditions of these professionals. Identify the ergonomic risk in the workplace of emergency room physicians, as well as understanding the regulatory aspects according to Spanish or European legislation not complied with regarding work with VDTs (Visual Display Terminals), and propose preventive recommendations to minimize health risks associated with VDT work. Different consultations in the Emergency Department of the University Clinical Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca in the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia are evaluated. Information is collected from VDU users themselves using an Evaluation Test that is part of the Technical Guide of the National Institute of Safety and Hygiene at Work (INSHT). The disorders evaluated are caused by the comfort issues that workers identify in their workplaces. The prevention or minimization of visual, physical, and mental fatigue should be based on the ergonomic design of the workplace and the set of tasks that configure it, adapting work to the individual, their capacities, and limitations.
