Introduction: One of the most common causes of groin pain in athletes is athletic pubalgia, which has a highly varied and complex pathogenesis and is common in sports like football and hockey. Diagnosis can be made using imaging techniques such as MRI, along with physical assessment and clinical history. Conservative treatment, including exercises and/or manual therapy, is generally preferred over surgical interventions, though their effectiveness varies. This systematic review aims to gather relevant information to optimize treatments for athletes.
Objectives: To evaluate the efectiveness between exercise-bases treatments and other type of interventions for groin pain in athletes.
Methodology: The databases Pubmed, Cochrane, WOS, Science Direct, and Scopus were used to conduct a retrospective systematic review. A search strategy was implemented with inclusion and exclusion criteria to select studies relevant to groin pain in athletes. Finally, 8 articles were included out of an initial 64, following a peer-review and an arbitration process. The PEDro scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the studies.
Results: Primarily randomized clinical trials were included, involving 306 participants aged between 21.3 and 42.8 years. Results were assessed using pain scales and disability questionnaires. Two tables summarize the key data.
Conclusions: Exercise-based treatments for pubalgia show positive results, but there isn’t enough evidence to compare them to other interventions.
