Introduction: Multisensory therapy is a type of non-pharmacological intervention that
seeks to promote a state of well-being and relaxation through sensory stimulation in
individuals suffering from various conditions, in this specific case, in people with
dementia and agitation.
Objective: To determine whether the use of multisensory therapy is beneficial in reducing,
controlling, and decreasing aggressive behaviors in individuals diagnosed with dementia.
Methodology: A systematic review was conducted using the PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus,
and Dialnet databases between January 1, 2014, and December 2023. Articles based on
other non-pharmacological therapies not included under multisensory stimulation were
excluded. Inclusion criteria required that the articles be published within the last ten years
and utilize multisensory therapy, regardless of whether it was conducted in a Snoezelen
room or not. The PRISMA 2020 protocol was applied for data extraction, and the quality
of the studies was assessed using the “Quality Assessment Tool” from NIHR.
Results: After analyzing the 8 studies included in the sample, it was observed that all of
them reported improvements in the reduction of behavioral symptoms following the use
of multisensory therapy.
Conclusions: Multisensory therapy is beneficial for reducing behavioral symptoms,
specifically agitation, but it is not exclusive for this purpose, as other nonpharmacological
therapies such as physical exercise, music, or leisure activities can also
be used.
