Malnutrition is a prevalent problem in the health care setting, standing out both for its frequency and its clinical and economic repercussions. Disease-associated malnutrition is related to high morbidity and mortality and quality of life, especially in vulnerable patients such as the elderly and those affected by chronic diseases. The main objective of this paper is to present the approach to the nutritional status of geriatric patients hospitalized in Internal Medicine. For this purpose, an exhaustive search in different databases was carried out in order to determine the way in which malnutrition states have an impact on health status, as well as its screening, diagnosis and morphofunctional assessment. Thus, early nutritional screening is highlighted as a measure to identify the risk of malnutrition and its possible complications, emphasizing the use of tools such as the MNA-SF. On the other hand, the GLIM criteria are presented as a standardized guide for the diagnosis of malnutrition in different health care settings. Finally, morphofunctional assessment methods are discussed, covering aspects such as anthropometric markers, biochemical parameters and functional tests (dynamometry). In conclusion, the incorporation of a holistic assessment of nutritional status in clinical practice is essential to provide quality health care and to effectively address malnutrition in all its clinical and functional manifestations.
