In order to control the occurrence of relevant clinical complications in the development of cirrhosis, several therapeutic strategies have been established in order to reduce the excessive inflammatory response. The use of probiotics is one among them. In this study, we have evaluated the effect of 6 new bacterial strains on the inflammatory response in Kupffer cells of cirrhotic rats in order to validate their potential as new homeostatic agent, determining the concentrations of TNF-alpha, MCP-1 and IL-6 in supernatants of cultures with this cells. Cirrhosis was induced in a group of Sprague-Dawley rats by bile duct ligation. Four weeks later, laparotomies were performed for the extraction of organs. After cell isolation and culture, cytokine quantification was performed by ELISA. We concluded that the culture with strain 2 did not increase the levels of TNF-alpha, MCP-1 and IL-6 compared to those produced by unstimulated cells. This results suggest the homeostatic role of this strain and its potential use in cirrhosis.
