Forced inclusion in audiovisual projects has acquired negative connotations due to various factors, such as the hiring of racialized actors out of mere obligation (this is known as tokenism), the racism in society, and the false traditions that supposedly require maintaining fictional characters with whitish appearances. This work aims to dispel the negative connotation of the term “forced inclusion” by analysing a period drama series that includes people of various ethnicities in its cast, demonstrating that there is a valid justification for the existence of such characters. The document focuses on the series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” a contemporary example of how ethnic inclusion can be genuine and not merely a response to social or political pressures. The reasons behind the choice of a diverse cast are explored through a detailed analysis of the series, and how this decision improves the narrative and provides a more inclusive and realistic representation of society. Additionally, the similarities of the series with real history are shown to demonstrate the creation and existence of an alternative universe where the events take place. This work seeks to demonstrate that ethnic inclusion in period dramas is not only valid and achievable but also necessary to reflect the diversity of today’s society. The point of this essay is to change the negative perception of “forced inclusion” and promote a more equitable and authentic representation in audiovisual media.
