The aim of this research is to study the evolution of music journalism and music
communication over the years, leading to the digital era in which we live today.
It also explores the opportunities offered by new technologies and platforms to
make this type of communication more effective and accessible to all, but it also
deals with the challenges they present, i.e. the disadvantages that arise from
their use.
The digital era has democratised information, allowing anyone with Internet
access to become a receiver, but also a creator of content. This has led to a
saturation of information, which raises the challenge of the veracity and
reliability of news, making the spread of fake news and misinformation a serious
problem.
However, this period has also presented important opportunities for music
journalism and the people who work in it. Professionals now have access to a
variety of tools that they can use to enhance their work. Social media, for
example, the biggest case in point, has provided a platform for communicators
to connect with their audience in a more direct and personal way, but which is
also used to reach more information and in a more effective way. In addition, digitisation has enabled the emergence of new formats and styles of
music journalism, such as podcasts, specialised blogs or videos by freelance
creators. All these developments offer a more dynamic and diverse perspective
on music that not only enriches the content, but also allows a closer and more
constant interaction with the audience, creating communities of committed and
recurrent followers. In this paper we will place special emphasis on the
aforementioned freelance creators, a great powerhouse of communication in
the digital age.
Like all forms of communication, music journalism is undergoing a
transformation at a dizzying pace and this work investigates through a
comprehensive vision all the aspects necessary to understand how music
journalism has evolved and adapted to social needs and trends. It analyses
trends, success stories and some strategies that have allowed some media and
journalists to stand out in such a competitive and changing environment.
