In the era of communication, journalism has undergone numerous changes, and video
game journalism is no exception. From the first reviews in 1974 by Play Peter Magazine
in the United States to the specialized critiques of today, this field has evolved
considerably. The relentless growth of technology has facilitated its dissemination, with
audiovisual formats standing out as one of the key advancements. This innovation has
transformed a specialized niche into a globally influential industry, encompassing
everything from indie games to major eSports events.
In its early days, video games media coverage provided limited information, mainly
aimed at guiding consumers in their game purchases. However, the arrival of
multimedia content, driven by the growing demand for online content, radically
transformed the landscape of video game journalism. Platforms like YouTube and
Twitch have made this possible by democratizing content, making visual and audio
formats essential even for professionalized video game news outlets.
The aim of this work is to thoroughly understand this evolution by investigating and
analyzing the changes in video game journalism over time, the impact it has had on
audiences, and the reach of the sector. Through a historical review and the analysis of
three current case studies, this research will highlight the importance of video game
media coverage and the indispensable role that audiovisual formats have played.
